Upscale Ukay Ukay

For all you aliens out there, Ukay Ukay in english would be similar to shopping at garage sales or at the Salvation army. Basically they are discarded, overrun, returned clothes from all over the world (mostly Korea and the USA), that people buy, wash and wear. We have these old baggy shirts we use for sleeping, blouses only used twice, those fantastic almost/with tag attached brand new pieces, then the ever so rare gem of finding branded originals (PRADA/ Chanel anyone?) all for the low LOW prices ranging from a thousand pesos (for authentic branded items) to 10 pesos at your local market on Sundays.
What an Upscale ukayukay store looks like

We Filipinos are notorious for being cheap and not wanting to waste anything (so thrifty that we turn our old yellowed, torn, sad little pieces of whats left of our underwear into dishrags- disgusting I know). We might even consider our mentality a little Jewish if not a whole lot Chinese.

Its great for us, as we can cut the cost of clothing in half in order to splurge on more notable things like that fancy meal you're dying to have of those fabulous Italian shoes you saw in SM.

I, personally, have tried one whole year of buying only ukay2x and no one in the world suspected my clothes to be just "upcycled" (except my mom, who loves to do the same).

Finally, to get to the point, since this is the local red light district of learning how to sew and do other stuff, I will include teaching the more salient points in "upcycling" ukay ukay.

I had just recently purchase 3 items, 1 that I am wearing now, and the other 2 that I will "edit" for tutorial/I will wear them later purposes.

Also on another note, ukay ukay is nicknamed UK(pronounced You-Kaay) as in UK-United Kingdom. This is a way for a thrift shopper to tell another person in public (as an inside joke) that what they are wearing is a thrift store find. This was popularized in a TIDE detergent TV commercial where a mother bought an ukay-ukay yellowed white dress for her daughters prom. After a good TIDE wash, the girl arrived at her prom, radiant in her pristine white dress. AS people admired her, a friend asked her where the dress was purchased and she confidently answered "UK, of course!".

Happy Birthday Curry! ♥♥♥

Today is my dad's birthday- HAPPY BIRTHDAY! --->

(mah cool dad)

and plus I got Star Craft 2! OMGHEEEE.
Sadly, I was sick this morning with a fever after getting drenched last night... :(

Skipping work in the morning to recover, I decided to make curry ahead for dinner because 1) my boyfriend was coming over and I wanted him to taste something else and 2) my dad might like it (we were supposed to go out but meh).

I started out by chopping onions and defrosting pork (clearly thinking of cooking stew) but next thing i knew I was already making curry.

So here is my curry recipe for your enjoyment :D

Curry a la whatever (easy, fast, moron proof)

1/2 kilo of any meat you might find (pork, chicken, beef) cubed
1 knorr/bullion of the meat you are using
1/2 cup of kikoman soy sauce/ regular soy sauce
1 small ginger (slice and crush)
1 big onion (chopped)
3 garlic cloves (w/o skin and chopped)
1 cup milk (evaporated/fresh)
2-3 big potatoes and carrots (peeled and diced)
salt & pepper to taste
CURRY POWDER (red/yellow- I use yellow)
Basil or any herbs (not marijuana) you might like to add (eg paprika, saffron, thyme, rosemary whatever you like)

Heat some oil in a deep pan, then add the onions. Wait for it to look white-ish then add your garlic. Add your meat (i used pork), then sauté' (fancy word for mix the meat inside the pan around), then salt and pepper this baby. Then in goes the veggies until the thing looks wet-ish.

After, add the soy sauce and 1 cup water. Wait for it to boil then throw in the knorr (pork)cube. Let it boil until the meat is soft. throw in that ginger and wait for it to boil some more (add water until the meat is tender)

Basically, you now have a stew so its time to add the herbs that you like (i put in basil and paprika and a dash of lemoncito)

Wait 5 mins then add the curry (2-3 tablespoons)
then carefully mix the stew until the whole thing turns an even yellow/brown.

Finally when it starts to bubble add that 1 cup of milk slowly, then mix it until well heated in.

Salt and pepper if you want to make it a little bit more salty or spicy.

TADAAAA! you have curry!

This can feed 3-4 people. If you tend to eat a lot, then maybe just 2 people.
Best served with hot rice and any fruit shake (like avocado..mmmmmm)

We had leftover chicken afritada and some tuna so it was a pretty good meal. SO AWESOME.

The dress I made from scratch in 2-3 hours.

Before I put anything else, here is a picture of my friend Sahlee Opone wearing the dress I made for her in 2-3 hours while she waited/slept on my bed in my house last week.

She didn't show the back but it had nice detailing on it as well as a nifty lace ribbon.
Nicely worn Sahl! Congratz to the couple who got married on that day woohoo.
